This dynamic application on Internet allows you to access data and metadata from the International Labour Organization Bureau of Statistics.
It consists of:
StatisticsThe welcome screen is split into two parts.
2.1 Left-hand side of the screen: menu to access statistics, metadata and useful information
This menu presents shortcuts that will ease you in your navigation to access statistics, metadata and useful information. For statistics and metadata, click on the box in order to show the full menu.
This menu is always accessible so that you could change easily from a data selection to another.
2.2 Right-hand side of the screen: main page
This is in this screen that all main part of the information will appear, such as what it is possible to do with the application, data selection, contents of the meta-information and so on.
The selection screen appears when a data selection link is clicked. This screen is split into two parts.
3.1 Left-hand side of the screen: data selection
This part of the screen allows you to choose the criteria for selected time-series. The application allows for 3 parameters in the selection process: country/territory(ies), year(s) and table(s).
3.1.1 Countries and territories
Some 200 countries and territories are listed in alphabetical order. By clicking in this selection window and typing a letter, the system automatically positions itself at the first listed country starting with the letter typed (for example "D" will go to Denmark). You may select several contiguous country/territoy(ies) using the "Shift+Click" combination or several non-contiguous ones through the "Ctrl+Click" combination.
LABORSTA contains time-series going back to 1969. You may specify the start and end year. The default selection gives you the 10 latest years.
For users familiar with the ILO Bureau of Statistics publications, the application's choice of tables corresponds to the Publication table of contents. You can select select several contiguous tables using the "Shift+Click" combination or several non-contiguous ones through the "Ctrl+Click" combination. The structure of the tables also mirrors the Yearbook, however, you do not need to know the Yearbook to use this application.
Having made your selection, you must click on the "Go!" button to submit your query to the server. Within a few seconds, the right-hand part of the screen is modified to show a 2-column table reflecting your selection.
3.2 Right-hand side of the screen: viewing/downloading selection
Prior to selection, this part of the screen simply displays a "waiting" message. Having made your selection, the list of table chosen appears with the number of records available. If data, you have then the possibility to view data or download them into a "Comma Separated Values" (CSV) file.
To view the data you selected, the application opens up an additional window in which each selection is displayed.
Note: You can select one or more countries and one or more tables. But you can only view or download one or more countries per table at a time.
Note: The label of sub-classification appears in a small box when the mouse goes on the cell (JavaScript feature).
Tips: Once you have your result on the screen, you can copy and paste the data on an Excel sheet. Then you can make calculation and save your work directly in Excel format.
Notes and breaks appear together with the data in the presentation tables. Footnotes are indicated in the tables by a reference number with the corresponding text at the end of the table. Different coloured cells indicate a break in series, explained by a text at the end of the table. Within tables, a new country is indicated by a change in background colour.
4.2 Methodological information and classifications
In the tables hyperlinks exist for several fields. By clicking on these fields the following information is displayed:
Once you have selected table(s) and submitted your request, a dialog box appears asking whether you wish to open the downloaded file or save it on a disk.
If you choose the "save it on a disk" another dialog box allows you to specify the file name.
If you choose to immediately process the file with another software (such as a spreadsheet for example), the values contained in the CSV file will be automatically assigned to cells. However, this process works properly only if the list separator of your operating system is a comma. Therefore, you must check this setting on your personal computer.
Note: You can select one or more countries and one or more tables. But you can only view or download one or more countries per table at a time.
