Since its first edition in 1935-36, the Yearbook of Labour Statistics has become established as the world’s foremost work of statistical reference on labour questions, bringing together in systematic form a wealth of data from a vast network of authoritative sources of information in nearly countries, areas and territories.

The statistics are published, wherever possible, according to the latest versions of the following international standard classifications: International Standard Industrial Classification of all Economic Activities (ISIC-Rev. 3); International Standard Classification of Occupations (ISCO-88); International Classification of Status in Employment (ICSE-93) and the International Standard Classification of Education (ISCED-97).

As from the 2006 issue, the Yearbook is released in two volumes:

  • Time series continues the time series format of previous editions of the 31 tables corresponding to the nine major substantive chapters on economically active population, employment, unemployment, hours of work, wages, labour cost, consumer prices, occupational injuries, and strikes and lockouts. Time series usually cover up to the preceding ten years.
  • Country profiles introduced sets by country latest year available for statistics on each of the topics listed above for the nearly 200 countries, areas and territories as well as global and regional estimates on the economically active population, employment and unemployment.

Yearbook of Labour Statistics - CD-ROM
Sources and Methods: Labour Statistics (Volumes 1-10)

This new CD-ROM duplicates the printed publication but provides over 40 years of data, rather than the 10 years covered in the printed edition of the Yearbook of Labour Statistics. It also includes the 10 volumes of series Sources and Methods: Labour Statistics to complement the brief explanations given in the Yearbook tables.

As with the printed edition, it contains 31 tables corresponding to the nine major substantive chapters on economically active population, employment, unemployment, hours of work, wages, labour cost, consumer prices, occupational injuries, and strikes and lockouts.

Occupational Wages and Hours of Work and Retail Food Prices, Statistics from the ILO October Inquiry

Bulletin of Labour Statistics

The Bulletin of Labour Statistics, published twice yearly, complements the annual data in the Yearbook of Labour Statistics with series on the following subjects: general level of employment; employment in non-agricultural activities and employment in manufacturing ; numbers and percentages of unemployed; average number of hours worked in non-agricultural activities and in manufacturing; average earnings or wage rates in non-agricultural activites and in manufacturing; consumer prices; general indices and food indices. The Bulletin also includes articles of interest to labour statisticians and other professionals.

Sources and Methods: Labour Statistics

Since 1984, the ILO Bureau of Statistics has produced methodological descriptions of the national statistics on all the subjects published in the ILO Yearbook of Labour Statistics. These have appeared in a series of volumes entitled Sources and Methods: Labour Statistics, comprising to date:
